CreditCardRewards.com Review

Written by Amy 9 months ago

TLDR:
One of the best airline credit cards for frequent fliers in the Southwest U.S. who spend at least $10,000 a year.

Review of the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Credit Card

The Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Credit Card is a great card for frequent Southwest flyers. As a sign-up bonus you'll earn 50,000 points when you spend $2,000 in purchases in the 1st 3 months, which can get you at least 1 roundtrip flight on Southwest. After your first year, you'll earn 6,000 bonus points every year after your cardmember anniversary.

Although this card doesn't offer automatic A-List tier status or an automatic companion ticket, you can earn those perks with points:

  • Tier Status: For every $10,000 spent in a calendar year, you'll earn 1,500 tier-qualifying points (up to 15,000 annually). Tier-qualifying points help you reach A-List or A-List Preferred status faster which gets you perks like priority check-in, same-day standby, points bonuses (25% for A-List and 100% for A-list Preferred), and more.

  • Companion Pass: If you earn 110,000 qualifying points in a year or take 100 qualifying one-way flights in a calendar year you qualify for a Companion Pass, which allows one companion to fly free (plus taxes and fees). Once you qualify, you can use the Companion Pas for the remainder of the calendar year and the following calendar year.

The main drawback to this card is that as a regional airline, Southwest offers limited flight destinations and has no partners to transfer points to.

Note that if you spend less than $10,000 a year, you can save $30 a year on the annual fee with the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Plus version of the card while still getting the same sign-up bonus and points earnings.

The Bottom Line
Great no-frills airline card if you fly in the Southwest, but because it’s a regional airline, if you’re looking for other destinations you may need to supplement with another travel credit card.
